Social Life
GETTING STARTED
Bangkok can be a confusing place to navigate. Take your time, obtain a good guidebook and map, and take short walks to explore different areas.
Most expat families are in similar circumstances and have similar needs and interests.
In most locations there is already and established expatriate community offering numerous opportunities for socializing and becoming involved in
activities. There are many clubs, especially well organized women’s groups that often have orientation programs or welcome networks to assist
new arrivals. In addition, several organizations offer orientation and cross-cultural courses that will help you understand and appreciate
Thai culture.
CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS
There are numerous organizations in Bangkok that cater to members of different national groups, such as the American Women’s Club, the British Women’s Club and the Hispanico-Thai Cultural Association. In addition, there are also numerous social clubs which include the Royal Bangkok
Sports Club, the Polo Club, the British Club and the International Women’s Club, to name a few.
LESISURE ACTIVITIES
Performing Arts
Bangkok has a thriving performing arts scene. It is a major stop on the international tour circuit for professional music, theater and art shows.
Bangkok also has excellent local productions in all artistic disciplines. The Bangkok Symphony Orchestra, the National Theater and the Bangkok
Community Theater hold performances throughout the year.
Art Galleries and Antique Stores
Chatuchak Market, River City, and Silom Galleria offer numerous art galleries and antique stores to browse through.
Bangkok has many up-and-coming and established artists who display their works in retail galleries and sponsored exhibitions.
Antique stores offer treasures both and “new.” Most dealers, if asked, will be upfront about which pieces are authentic antique and which are reproductions.
Classes
It is possible to study almost anything in Bangkok; art, cooking, dance martial arts, gemology, dressmaking and design, languages, music,
photography are just a few of the disciplines offered. Most facilities are excellent, the instructors are well informed, and the cost are
quite reasonable.
SPORTS AND FITNESS
Fitness Centers
There are many fitness centers in Bangkok. California Wow, Clark Hatch and Fitness First, to name just a few, all offer world class facilities
and knowledgeable trainers in numerous locations. In addition, most major hotels have fitness centers which the public may join.
Organized Sports
For the avid athlete, clubs and organizations offer the chance to join a league or play pick-up games of basketball, soccer, rugby cricket, softball
and tennis. There are also weekend runs for the marathoner and beginning runners alike.
Golf
Thailand has numerous professionally designed golf courses, both close to Bangkok and at major resort areas. Most are open to the public
every day, and green fees are reasonable. Caddies are usually female and are available on all courses. In addition to the caddy fee, it is
c
ustomary to provide a tip.
VOLUNTEER WORK
Like most big cities, social resources in Bangkok are stretched, and volunteer groups play an active role in many local community programs.
Expats with special skills are warmly welcomed, but so are those who can only offer a helping hand or loving touch. Projects and programs
are too numerous to list, but a few examples are: the Pakkred Babies’ Home Foundation, the Bangkok School for the Blind, and the Sparrow
Home for Babies & Children of Prisoners.
